Maths Challenge Award
The Epoch and Optima Trust awarded a grant to Crescent Girls' High School for their outstanding results over the years. This grant, known as the Epoch and Optima Independent Schools Maths Challenge, is used to promote excellence in Mathematics.
The funding received from the trust has allowed our maths department to develop a fully equipped Math Lab. There has been a marked improvement in results of learners over the past four years. We have been able to employ additional Mathematics educators so that we can have smaller classes of 12-15 learners at a time. The smaller classes have allowed maths educators to focus on learners' barriers to learning and create stimulating remedial programmes to improve on the aspects that need attention.
Further to the lessons taught during the school day, the grant has also allowed us to run a weekly tuition programme for grade 9-12 throughout the academic year. External tutors are employed to provide free tuition to our learners. We have noted that learners who attended gained immensely and that there was a significant improvement in their marks.
The Grant also allowed the school's Maths Department to purchase a variety of teaching aids that would stimulate and keep learners interested in the study of Mathematics. Alhumdulillah, we now have a fully equipped maths lab furnished with a Smartboard, laptops and computers, tablets, data projector, software programmes, reference books, and various other educational aids to assist teachers and learners. We have also been able to offer incentives in the form of gifts to the learners who obtained the highest mark in Mathematics in each grade, each term. We hope to continue this partnership with the Epoch and Optima Trust in order to provide our learners with every opportunity to make our Maths lessons a fun, meaningful and worthwhile learning experience for all.
